Although it seems bizarre when a hoard of people yell appalling words at a screen, I don't think it's such a foreign concept today. I used to think the people in the party were so crazy but now, I'm not so sure if we're all that different from them.
Hate Week in "1984" as well as the routine 2-Minutes-Hate seemed weird. But, I started to think that there were actually many instances throughout history when large crowds gathered together -- in person as well as online -- to spread massive hate and sometimes misleading information to target another race, religion, gender, and culture.
Personally, the concept of Hate Week seemed somewhat similar to a Trump rally and other "hate" rallies I've seen. This video shows the 2 minute hate in the movie version of 1984.
This video shows clips of how Trump supporters often express their views in very verbal and provocative ways.
Not only in Trump rallies, but in other countries, I've seen a lot of similar gatherings focusing on having hateful thoughts towards someone else.
Interesting - another example of this could be sports events, where thousands of fans become deeply angry at the other team, the refs, or maybe their own team. I think the primary difference between the way this hate functions in 1984 and the way it functions in our society is (with the disturbing exception of January 6th) hate isn't often used to mobilize citizens into action, or inaction in the case of the 2 minutes hate.
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree. I talked about similar stuff, but I really like how you used videos as well. I think our current culture has a lot more similarities with 1984's society than we think.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, at this point I've filtered out so many things that I kinda forgotten about trump rallies at this point. I totally agree with your point, though, these rallies do match up with the 2 minutes hate in quite a few ways.
ReplyDeleteI 10000% percent agree with your point!! On snapchat I've seen a couple of trump rallies videos on peoples stories and it totally mimics this book. Maybe they all read this book and were inspired (wait thats probably wrong but i feel like half of them dont know how to read) Love that for trump supporters lol😍
ReplyDeleteYes -- great comparison!
